Katelyn Convery

Katelyn Convery joins Mock Crest Tavern Saturday evening, July 12th at 9:00 p.m.

Katelyn was born in Portland, Oregon, and is a singer-songwriter who draws inspiration from the human experience and her travels across the world.

She purchased her first guitar at the age of 16, taught herself to play, and started writing simple songs. She continued writing songs in high school and during her first 2 years of college at the University of Oregon. However, real inspiration didn’t hit until she traveled to Europe in 2006 to attend a study abroad program in Oviedo, Spain.

“Leaving the country for the first time was like being reborn. It was like breaking free of my self-made cocoon and finally being able to see past the end of my nose. It began a period of processing my feelings and observations through song-writing. And it’s never really left me since.”

Katelyn now resides in Cape Town, South Africa, where she hopes to record a full-length album including her most recent songs in the next year.

I’ve got some fun Portland trivia for everyone:

Fiction novelist Chuck Palahniuk, makes his home in Portland. He shares about his time here in his book, Fugitives and Refugees: A Walk in Portland, Oregon

Over 100 years ago, Portland was considered the most dangerous city in the states to go out for a drink. Not because you might end up dead, but instead shanghaied on a boat to another country.

Portland’s “Shanghai Tunnels”, lesser known as “Portland Underground”, connected the basements of many downtown hotels and pubs to the Willamette River’s waterfront. Originally built to move goods from docked ships, these tunnels quickly created a unique network of passages and thoroughfares that were used by unscrupulous individuals called “shanghaiiers” or “crimps”, to move drugged and kidnapped individuals unto ships and into slavery and prostitution.
