Suburban Slim is a huge favorite at Mock Crest Tavern with his blues music. Phil Wagner (aka Suburban Slim) has played the ukulele since childhood and later learned guitar. Phil grew up in Northern California, where he recorded his first album at the age of 15. Later, he toured Oregon and moved to Eugene where he stayed for several years before relocating to Portland.

And to finish off the post I’ll leave you with some trivia to keep your mind sharp and the game on.

  • The comedy series Portlandia, shoots on location in Portland, satirizing the city as a hub of liberal politics, organic food, alternative lifestyles, and anti-establishment attitudes. It’s all about living the “dream of the 90s” and its all pretty much true.
  • The famous White Stag sign in downtown Portland now reads Portland Oregon. At one time, it used to say Made in Oregon– a bone of contention among many Portlanders. The day after Thanksgiving a red bulb is lit on the stag’s nose to welcome the holiday season.

Have a great week and we’ll see ya there!

Johnnie Ward Opens Open Mic Night

Happy-Thursday-DudeThere are two fantastic reasons to love Thursday. One, it’s that much closer to Friday and the weekend and two, it’s Open Mic/Jam night at Mock Crest Tavern. This week Johnnie Ward will kick off the fun!

Johnnie, originally from Portland, has performed with bands including the PH Phactor Jug Band, and opened for Moby Grape, The Grateful Dead, Pentangle, The Doors, and several other famous groups.

I hope everyone enjoyed the post about Roy Smallwood and his hit game Quizzy. If you missed it you can read it here. He hosts Quizzy Trivia every Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. so bring your friends and join the fun.

Here are some great trivia tidbits to help you win and it’s all about Portland.

  • The city is noted for its superior land-use planning and investment in their light rail system. With its public transportation networks and efficient land-use planning, Portland has been referred to as one of the most environmentally friendly, or “green”, cities in the world.
  • Being home to more than 60 breweries, Portland has more microbreweries than any other city in the world. No wonder Portland has been named the best city for happy hour in the United States.
  • Portland is one of the few destinations outside of France where you can take your dog into pubs.
  • During the dot-com boom of the mid-to-late 1990’s,  Portland saw an influx of people in their 20’s and 30’s, drawn to the promise of a city with abundant nature, urban growth boundaries, cheaper rent, and opportunities to work within the graphic design and Internet industries, as well as for companies such as Doc Martens, Nike, Adidas, and Wieden+Kennedy. Sound familiar?

Have a great week and we’ll see ya there!

Finn Doxie has performed since 2011 around the Portland area. Their frequent visits to the Hillsboro venue ‘Primrose & Tumbleweeds’ garnered them a write-up in the March issue of the Washington County Review.

The duet puts their unique twist on modern popular and alternative hits by combining percussive guitar with the Celtic harp. Their musical styles cover energetic, beat-driven indie-pop and expressive and intimate ballads.

If you enjoy tunes by The Killers, The Verve, Coldplay, All-American Rejects, Jack White, Imagine Dragons, Blue October, and Snow Patrol then you won’t want to miss Finn Doxie!

Dakota Bob and the Business Men Blues Band perform Saturday, April 26th at Mock Crest Tavern. The performance begins at 9 p.m.

Dakota Bob has played for years, and well-recognized throughout the North and Midwest. Previously with a group in Washington, he later began playing with a Jazz band group from Portland. The group clicked and formed the band “Dakota Bob and the Business Men Blues”.

Members Include:

  1. Dakota Bob – Guitar and Harmonica
  2. Kdawg – Bass
  3. Johnny – Drums

Dakota Bob began his music career as Harmonica Bob, but after locating someone with the same name, he changed  it to Dakota Bob. He discovered his love for playing while diagnosed with a terminal illness. He discovered that while playing his harp, the side affects of his medications lessened and he found a renewed energy.
