What’s Happening at Mock Crest Tavern This Weekend?

ReverbThe Reverb Brothers are kicking off your weekend at Mock Crest Tavern on August 30th. The show begins at 9:00 p.m.

The Reverb Brothers, a six-piece band, blend roadhouse, roots country, blues, jug, New Orleans, R&B, rock & roll and old-time jazz. Their music brings a high energy with  acoustic and electric instruments and great vocals. The Reverb Brothers offer original tunes as well as obscure covers from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Their material has grown through their search of music and artists that their childhood heroes listened to. They attribute their sound to artists including The Stones, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash.  And, just to dig deeper they also listened to older performers including Muddy Waters, Riley Pucket, Richard “Rabbit” Brown, Little Willie John and Big Bill Broonzy. That’s a lot of artists helping form the group we know today as The Reverb Brothers.

Members Include:

  • Claes Almroth: keyboards, mouth harp, lead vocals
  • Doug Marx: acoustic guitar, lead vocals
  • Allan Lemley: electric guitar, back-up vocals
  • Dave “Gutbucket” Duffield: blues cornet
  • Whit Draper: electric bass
  • Fred Ingram: drums, back-up smiles

The Reverb Brothers are all veterans of the Northwest roots music scene.

They also released an Ep “For The Festival” available to hear at MySpace.  Feel free to hop on over to their Facebook page as well.

And to celebrate the last day of August,  Mock Crest Tavern will bring in Modern Pantheist. You’re sure to enjoy this great psych rock group from Los Angeles, California. The performance begins at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday the 31st.

They just released their debut album, and you can hear their tunes on their website. I loved “Lust for Hearts” and “How Everything Comes Around”. I suspect we will hear much more from them in the future.

Have a great week, and we’ll see ya there!

Charles Ellsworth Plays at Mock Crest Tavern

charlesLet’s help welcome Charles Ellsworth, Shadow Puppet to Mock Crest Tavern August 29th! They are stopping by while on their West Coast Tour and their show begins at 8:30 p.m.

Charles, originally from Arizona, brings a blend of Americana, Country and Blues music with him. He attributes such greats as Johnny Cash, Chuck Ragan and Steve Earl as some of the strongest influences on his musical career.

When  someone new appears I reach for my laptop and begin my Google search for reviews.  Other people’s opinions can certainly sway someone. And in this case, this review of Charles Ellsworth should have you writing the performance date on your calendar!

“Charles Ellsworth is a storyteller. If his music doesn’t keep you listening (and it should), his vivid lyrics will stop your hand from skipping anything on this EP. Ellsworth’s vocals remind me of Matt Berninger, laced with the blues and 1960s country. “Last I Heard and Last I Checked” is an ode to what could have been—just a man and his guitar, soulfully pondering. Lyrics like “tell the Lord your plans if you wanna make him laugh, cuz when I told him mine I had him rolling on his back” were reason enough for me to finally figure out how to use the repeat function on my home stereo. You’re going to hum these songs, and your friends are going to ask you for a copy of whatever it is you’re singing. Lucky for them, Ellsworth is happy to share. Just find him on Facebook already.” –Andrew Roy SLUG Magazine

His website offers an Immediate download of “Gentle On My Mind”. It’s available in high-quality MP3, FLAC and several other formats. You can also visit his FaceBook page.

Sneakin’ Out has warmed up the crowd for famous singers including kd lang, John Jorgenson and Pink Martini. They also released their CD, “Train Wreck”, that is available to listen to and purchase on My Space. Claes Almroth This Thursday!

Claes Almroth

Claes Almroth

It’s a double treat this month at Mock Crest Tavern with Claes Almroth from the Blueprints bringing down the house Thursday night, August 22nd. His amazing performance begins at 8:30 sharp so grab your seats and drinks early!

For those of you not as familiar with Claes and his musical ability here’s some fun details. He was born in Sweden, but then came over to the United States, California actually. Through the years his interest in music grew and he learned to play the piano. It wasn’t long until he picked up the harmonica as well.

Around the age of 13 or 14, the “underground” FM rock radio came into existence . Claes heard artists such as Paul Betterfield, Charliyue Musselwhite, BB King, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. They influenced his life and encouraged him to continue in his musical journey.

He relocated to Oregon during the 70’s. He played in Corvallis as part of a jug band, a blues band, and enrolled in music classes. In the 80’s he moved to Portland, and not long after The Blueprints were born. Today, he plays  in a number of bands, where he sings lead and harmony vocals; plays the keyboard, and harmonica, as well as writes and records his own music.

Other bands he performs with include:

  • The Blueprints
  • Claes and Sons
  • Reverb Brothers
  • The New Iberians

He also plays with Johnny Ward and the Papas occasionally.

Feel free to hear his music and learn more about him on myspace.
